A time of Giving and Thanks

The last few weeks have been very busy for me, but I have found a new passion...COOKIES!!!

First, I made a gift basket for a dental team with a "sweet" tooth

Next, I had the honor again this year to bake for Brett's Blessings, a non-profit charitable organization created in memory of Brett Burdick, who passed away on December 8, 2008 in the intensive care unit of Children's Medical Center, Dallas. The mission is to assist local DFW and North Texas hospitals any way we can, whether it's through the donation of new, unwrapped toys to the children staying there, or in the form of monetary donations which can help ease the burden of financially distressed parents.

For the bake sale this year I made Build-A-Bear sugar cookies:

This last week I was so excited to get to bake our annual "I'm Thankful for my Teacher" gift baskets. This years baskets were themed to match cute sayings
"I am simply bananas for you" - Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
"Brownie Points" - Brownie Bites
"You're the apple of my eye" - Chocolate Covered Apples
"I love you to pieces" - Puzzle Piece Sugar Cookies

Also in the midst of all this cookie creating I had a small side project of 40 cookies and cream cupcakes for a special little girls birthday, I was told they were a huge hit!!

Take some time to GIVE and be THANKFUL!

Giving Back and Giving Away

A good friend of mine, along with some other good friends of his, came together to create an amazing foundation called Building Smiles Foundation.

"Our mission is to bring smiles to the families dealing with Childhood Cancer. We will strive to bring joy and smiles to these families, by providing entertainment and family fun during this tough challenge. We will also work on raising awareness of Childhood Cancer, because with everyone’s help; we can ensure a smile goes a long way."

I am beyond blessed to have two amazing, beautiful, smart and HEALTHY children. I can not imagine the struggles that an entire family goes through when one member is sick and fighting for their life. So why not provide an opportunity to make memories that do not involve that struggle, but involve laughter, joy and SMILES!

So you're wondering what any of this has to do with Yo Mama's Bakery...glad you asked :)

To find out the answer you need to go to Building Smiles Foundation and LIKE their page. Then stay tuned because when their fan page hits 200 there will be a delicious reward...

Chocolate Pumpkins cakes, Dead Hand Mixer and Burnt Dinner

So this week has seen some yummies, mummies and oopsy-daisies...ok, maybe not really mummies, but the hand mixer did die and it was tragic and sad, well maybe not all that tragic, but a little sad...I do after all have my amazing stand mixer.

I know, you really want to get to the chocolate pumpkins cakes, but first let me just state that sometimes just because you can bake doesn't mean the cooking part comes as naturally, or that you can't have an off day at the oven...yeah that's what happened Monday when I burned dinner. Do not fret Subway saved us from starving :)

and now....drum roll....Chocolate pumpkin cakes

Stay tuned to see what happens when these delicious little cakes get decorated.

There will also be a give away soon for those people who are fans on the Facebook page once we reach 100 fans, so spread the word!

Hello, my Name is Kimberly and I am addicted to reading blogs

Recently I have discovered a couple of blogs that I am completely in LOVE with, some might say addicted to. I am pretty much so addicted that I just sit and read instead of actually practicing what I've learned. The great thing about these two amazing women is that they're completely different blogs, one is cookies and the other is cake pops. So who are my newest obsessions:

LilaLoa (not only do I think that she is FABULOUSLY talented, but she is EXTREMELY funny and wonderful about connecting with her fans). I woke up this morning to find that I had won a contest that I entered this last week, which means that now I will HAVE to make some cookies!

Pop.O.Licious (she also writes http://www.365cakepops.com), I usually stalk 365 cake pops, she is also FABULOUSLY talented, and EXTREMELY funny and wonderful about connecting with her fans too.Recently I won a Where's Waldo blog contest that she hosted and I have to say I wasn't sure I'd find Waldo first, because I had to keep telling my self stop reading the blog FIND Waldo!! lol, so I found him and received my prize in the mail yesterday...Look at how cute she wrapped the box:

So when people tell you that you spend to much time reading blogs and connecting with your blogger, just tell them that you never know you could win fabulous prizes for being a loyal follower!!! Stay tuned to see what goodies I come up with using my prizes :)

Happy Blog Stalking!

Sunflowers for a soon to be Bride

Last week a friend of mine contacted me to do a wedding shower cake, that was on a Wednesday night, the cake was for that Friday. My luck was when she told me that she needed 15 cupcakes and I pretty much had creative control beyond that. She said that her friends engagement photos were more of a country theme, so I went in that same direction. This resulted in a basket bouquet of sunflowers and a blue prize ribbon.

Tim Burton Themed Cupcake Contest

I recently joined a group on Facebook called Bake Your Cupcake Off. Once a month a contest is hosted, this month the theme was Tim Burton. My first instinct was to go with Alice in Wonderland, but then I thought so many people would choose that one as well. So I started listing the movies and trying to narrow it down to one. After talking to my nine year old son, I might add here that he is brilliant :), he tells me "Mom, the theme is Tim Burton, not a specific movie, so just do a cupcake for each of the movies you have listed." BRILLIANT!!! I tell you.

I began to make a list of the movies and which elements from the movies would make the cupcakes the most recognizable. That's when I realized that I have not seen as many Tim Burton films as I thought I had. I know which ones are the most popular or recognizable, but I have not seen them. So I created 12 cupcakes themed to Tim Burton and the movies he creates. Enjoy!

From the Left: Edward Scissorhands, Planet of the Apes, Alice in Wonderland (represented in two cupcakes), Sleepy Hallow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, James and the Giant Peach, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeny Todd
I am very excited how these turned out and can not wait for next months theme!!
